An exceptional set of six Regency side or dining chairs, probably by Gillows, circa 1820, unusually made in solid Gonçalo Alves (Albuera wood), the cane seats with their original squabs originally intended to have been upholstered with tabs which were ingeniously held in place through slots in the seat rails and secured/tied underneath on a gilt brass fitting.
A set of six chairs by Gillows, with stamped marks, sold Bonhams London 23rd November 2004, £3,585; also made in Gonçalo Alves, feature the classic Gillows design reeded leg and more unusually the slots in the seat rails.
