March’s Item of the Month is a pair of decorated terracotta Etruscan style amphora, Naples, Italy, circa 1820, after the Antique, in the manner of Giustiniani.

The firm of Giustiniani was founded by Antonio Giustiniani, and moved to Naples by Antonio’s son Nicola in 1752; its most successful period was in the early 19th century under the direction of Nicola’s son, Biagio. The firm specialised in producing copies of Ancient vases and vessels, the use of ancient forms and decoration, in response to the tastes of the period. The firm closed shortly after 1885.

The Metropolitan Museum in New York has an interesting article about the ancient art of ‘Athenian Vase Painting: Black- and Red-Figure Techniques’ describing the techniques which influenced these later copies: Athenian Vase Painting: Black- and Red-Figure Techniques | Essay | The Metropolitan Museum of Art | Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History (metmuseum.org)
